Online Grocery Shop App

Designed for: Personal Project

This project was for my UI/UX and HCD Design course at Macromedia University. The objective of the course was to learn how to design a service that helps people redefine healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.

"Grovoicery" is an application that allows users with special needs to shop for groceries with the help of an AI assistant.

Design Goals

  • Expedite customers flow

  • Increase Accessibility

  • Intuitive experience for people with special abilities

  • Transfer people's life into healthier ones

The first step in our design process is Discover. For this project, we created a vision board to identify the target group that we want to increase their level of well-being and health.

Then we created a stakeholder map to visualize the process of laying out all the stakeholders of the project and ideas on one map.

To find other competitors in the health and wellbeing field, we investigated about some existed health well-being Apps and we found that there is an empty room for elderly people to concentrate on. There was no App to consider seniors' needs of being independent and taking care of themselves to have a healthy lifestyle.

We created a "How Might We" board and brainstormed to define our point of view for further research, focusing on elderly people.

Problem

  • Design service to cultivate a positive lifestyle for elderly people

  • Design service to help seniors feel less lonely

Solution

An interface that expedites the user flows with the help of an assistant and provides health-related products.

In order to understand our users' painpoints we conducted interviews with 5 participants of over 60 years old, we cluster the result under 5 categories to analyze and synthesize all needs.

The main needs were:

  • Being more independent while using social networking Apps.

  • Less need for others in housework, shopping and cooking.

After interviewing and analyzing users' needs we created a value proposition canvas to understand users' pains and gains based on interview answers.

In orfer to define the business we created a SWOT analysis to ensure that we have empathy for the user and the business during the design process. Although in this case, we don’t have a real business, we made some assumptions.

Ideation phase is started by using 6-3-5 method with all teammates. Each person had 3 columns in a paper and fill each with 3 ideas to solve the problem. After 3 minutes the papers are passed clockwise to the next person. At the end, we voted them in order to choose one. So, according to the votes we decided to work on an App with voice recognition feature to facilitate the process of placing orders for elderly people.

Gudrun wants to cook, she needs fresh organic vegetables. She logs in to her grocery app account. She goes to the products page, she chooses the vegetable category. She adds some vegetables into her basket. She needs to know how should she proceed with the purchase, so she calls the AI assistant to help her complete the purchase.

Refinement Based on Usability Testing

  • An assistant button is added to the login page

  • Filters are added to the home page

  • Promotions are added to the home page

  • Users like to see the recommended products

  • An assistant button is added in the bottom navigation bar instead of the chat button on the home page

  • A search box is added to the home page

  • Instead of guidance assistant introduces her/himself to build trust

  • The most common questions are removed

  • The proceed to check out button is removed and users can directly go to their basket

  • Important product information is highlighted

We brainstormed and gathered all pictures that remind us of a sense of physical and mental well-being then we created a mood board out of those and selected our color system.

Visual design is important. Having a well-researched and tested logo is important. So we conducted a poll with 8 users in which they could vote for each logo and explain the reason. 5 out of 8 voted for the logo that is marked above because it represents the eye and ear and it seems there is an operator who talks to them.

What I learned

  • The most important thing our team learned was to express ourselves and our ideas to prevent further problems.

  • Time management is very important, especially in group projects. Missing a deadline has a very deep effect on the other’s role impact.

  • As UX Designers, we should consider marketing and business aspects as we work on the design as well. The application needs to have a financial benefit for both sides to keep them motivated.

Next Steps

  • Test the high-fidelity designs with the users

  • Add language options because not all seniors may be fluent in English

  • Create screens for a few other Task Flows and design a responsive website

  • Introduce AI

  • Let the user choose the specific brand and type of product

  • Recommend recipes based on their diet
